CHENNAI: The Government would hold re-elections to 17 cooperative societies, said Ko.Si. Mani, Minister for Cooperatives, on Sunday. The list includes Chennai-based Pallavan (Metropolitan) Transport Corporation’s housing cooperative society and IMPCOPS employees’ cooperative thrift society. Though the date has not been announced, re-elections are likely to be held before July 18, the last date of polling in the various societies. Elections to the 7,341 cooperative societies under the control of the registrar and 15,593 societies under the functional registrar are being held in four phases this month. In the first phase, elections were held to 5,915 societies. The filing of nominations for the second phase ended on Thursday. Elections for the second, third and fourth phase would be held on July 11, 15 and 18. The heads of the societies would be elected in the last week of July. In the first phase of elections to primary cooperative societies held on July 2, 10,047 committee members were unanimously elected from 1,338 societies. Elections to eight of the 583 societies have been postponed on the grounds of law and order problem during the poll. In elections to Primary Agricultural Cooperative Banks (PACBs) in Anumanthai in Villupuram, ballot boxes were removed; in Chinna Kalaiamputhur and Karadikuttam in Dindigul and in T. Mannarpalayam in Salem district, ballot papers were taken away. In Pappampatti voting did not take place as ink was poured on ballot papers. In Kancheepuram, elections to the Muthaiyalpet PACB were cancelled owing to a dispute. In Vadugapatti in Dharmapuri district, ballot papers were torn and ink poured into ballot boxes. In Gobichettipalayam in Erode, efforts to pacify voters failed after trouble during voting. On Saturday, trouble began during counting of votes at Senthanadu and Kidar PACB in Villupuram and IMPCOPS employees’ cooperative thrift society. In the first phase of elections to 2,376 milk cooperative societies, directors to 1,943 societies were unanimously elected. Of the 197 societies, elections were held to 196 societies. During voting at Neikarapatti society in Dindigul district some ballot papers were torn and the rest taken away. Under the cooperative housing societies, nominations were not filed in seven of the 255 societies. Election of committee members was unanimous in 230 and polling was held for 18 societies. Voting at Pallavan cooperative housing society was suspended following trouble. Elections to the following fishermen’s cooperative societies under functional registrars have been suspended: Kizh Seruvai society, Cuddalore, Settapatti society in Salem, Tambikottai Vadakkadu society in Thanjavur and Kayampattu palm grower’s society in Tiruvannamalai. Re-elections will be held to the following societies: Chennai’s Pallavan transport corporation cooperative housing society and IMPCOPS employees’ cooperative thrift society; PACBs of T.Mannarpalayam and Pukkampatti in Salem, Chinnakalayamputhur and Pappampatti in Dindigul, Karadikoottam in Palani taluka, Anumanthai, Senthanadu and Kidar in Villupuram, Muthiyalpettai in Kancheepuram, Gobichettipalayam in Erode and Vadukapatti in Dharmapuri. Re-election will be held to fishermen’s cooperative societies of Tambikottai Vadakkadu in Thanjavur, Chettipatti in Salem, Kizh Seruvai in Cuddalore; and Kayampattu palm grower’s cooperative society in Tiruvannamalai. Elections to eight societies had earlier been postponed for various reasons at the time of filing of nomination.
