Leaders condole Chandra Sekhar’s death

Government announces State mourning till July 14

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and leaders of various political parties on Sunday condoled the death of former Prime Minister Chandra Sekhar.

Mr. Barnala described Mr. Chandra Sekhar as a great Parliamentarian and an able administrator who fought for the cause of the poor and the downtrodden. “He was known for his flawless oratory, simplicity and courage and he stood for his ideals and principles,” he said.

Expressing shock and agony at the demise of Mr. Chandra Sekhar, Mr. Karunanidhi said the former Prime Minister consistently followed the policy of secularism. His death was a great loss to the nation, the Chief Minister said.

Mr. Karunanidhi conveyed his deep condolences to Mr. Chandra Sekhar’s family.

General secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Jayalalithaa said Mr. Chandra Sekhar had a distinguished political career and made a distinct mark as a Parliamentarian. “He was outspoken in his views and firm in his commitment to principles.”

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said the former Prime Minister was committed to principles and progressive ideas.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko recalled Mr. Chandra Sekhar’s role in opposing emergency and defending democracy.

Desiya Murpokko Dravida Kazhagam leader Vijayakant said the former Prime Minister had progressive ideas and fought for the welfare of the poor and the downtrodden.

There will be State mourning till July 14. During this period the national flag will fly at half mast and there will be no official entertainment, an official release said.
