TIRUVALLUR: Terrorism is assuming serious proportions in Tamil Nadu, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam founder Vijayakant said on Sunday.

Referring to the reports of emergence of terrorism in different parts of the State, he faulted the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for not addressing the problem effectively. Many of those involved in terrorism were educated persons and the reason why such individuals took to terrorism was that they could not get jobs. “When they (DMK) could promise that they would give colour television sets to every household, why do not they assure the people that they would provide employment to at least one member in every family," he asked, addressing a rally organised by the traders’ wing of the DMDK in Tiruvallur, about 50 km from Chennai.

He adverted to the recent killing of the Sivaganga municipal chairman and said that for the first time in the State, a person was murdered using the remote control technique.

Criticising the DMK for the violence during the cooperative elections, the DMDK leader said that this showed that there was no respect for other constituents of the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance.

When he complained against violence in the past, the DMK’s allies maintained silence. Now, they were experiencing what his party had gone through. “Why are they still continuing in the alliance,” Mr Vijayakant asked.

Cauvery issue

Attacking Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on the Cauvery issue, the DMDK leader wondered why Mr. Karunanidhi had not yet spoken to the Prime Minister on this issue. He was not interested in the interests of the State, Mr Vijaykant said.

On the outcome of the Madurai West byelection, he said it was money power that determined the election. Still, his party secured about 21,000 votes, for which he was thankful to the people. On big players entering retail trade, he said this would result in the elimination of small traders from the business. His party would stand by the trading community.

He said he could not be cowed down by raids of income tax department officials or demolition of a marriage hall belonging to him. His party would continue to pursue all the issues affecting the people. His party’s focus would remain on the elimination of corruption and unemployment, Mr Vijayakant said.

Panruti S. Ramachandran, chairman of the DMDK presidium, said injustice was being meted out to the State on several issues, including Mullaperiyar.
