A welcome holiday for children

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: India is known as the land of holidays. Educational institutions, government offices apart from banks and insurance companies enjoy the benefit of these holidays. However, there are a few months in the calendar without any such break. July, perhaps, is the most hated as it has practically no holiday, barring weekends.

The State’s decision to declare Monday a holiday in memory of the former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar came as a welcome announcement. Unfortunately for students, the announcement was on a Sunday. For those who did not read the newspapers or switch on the TV, it was business as usual till they reached their schools. Of course, some got to know about the holiday when their school van or bus did not turn up.The holiday, however, put parents working in the private sector in a spot. Many of them had left for work and a number of them had to scramble back home or make alternative arrangements.
