Pitiable condition: Residents of Vijayanagar Palace area in front of the Collectorate in Udhagamandalam on Monday. —
Udhagamandalam: A plea to provide houses was made to the district administration here on Monday by the residents of Vijayanagaram Palace area in Coonoor. In a petition submitted to the Collector, they pointed out that about 125 families, including many Sri Lankan repatriates, had been residing in the area since 1977. Stating that the owner of the place, armed with a court order, had initiated steps to evict them, they pointed out that many of those affected were school going children. Since they were homeless, their predicament was pitiable. They urged the Collector to either accommodate them in group houses or make alternative arrangements. Mr. Misra told mediapersons that efforts would be made to help them.
