NEW DELHI: The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) has expressed concern over the fatwa issued by Darul Uloom Deoband against co-education. The AIDWA feels that while any organisation, religious or otherwise, has the right to express its opinion on any subject, it should not come out with a pronouncement against anything that is constitutionally legal. In a statement issued here on Monday, the association said it was unfortunate that at a time when the Muslim community was making efforts to overcome educational backwardness and demands were being made to implement the Sachar Committee recommendations, a fatwa had been issued to limit the already limited education for girls. The association, however, welcomed the criticism of the fatwa by many Muslim scholars and clerics, though most of them insisted on a special ‘dress code’ for Muslim girls in co-educational institutions. “We believe that in the matter of dress, the wishes of the individual should be respected wherever there is no uniform prescribed by institutions,” it said.
