When Yezdis and Jawas vroomed past the streets

MYSORE: The vintage era of Yezdis and Jawas was brought alive when a group of youths rode the macho bicycles that once ruled Indian roads on the city roads with the motorbikes to mark “International Yezdi Day.”

Although not many of these bicycles are seen on the roads these days, there are people who have preserved them with utmost care and ride them for sheer pleasure whenever they wish. ]Nonetheless, some still regularly ride these bikes.

On Sunday, about 20 youths rode a fleet of Yezdi and Jawa bicycles to mark the day. The rally was flagged off atop Chamundi Hills. They rode along MG Road, Court Road, V.V. Mohalla and Bannimantap before culminating at Bal Bhavan on Nelson Mandela Road here.

Incidentally, the passion for Yezdi and Jawa bikes was showcased for the first time in the city where the bikes were manufactured by Ideal Jawa (India) Limited.

Bikes such as Yezdi, Jawa, Roadking, Monark and other variants, which are two decades old, were showcased in the rally. Production of these bikes stopped after Ideal Jawa shut down its operations in 1995.
