The road from Perungudi to Saraswathi Narayanan College is damaged. It leads to villages like Parambupatti and Valayapatti. Goods-laden vehicles use this stretch frequently as it is a short cut to the city. Red soil from a dried-up pond is being transported along this road. Small accidents are common on this road and for two-wheeler riders using this road is an adventure. The staff members of the college, teachers of nearby schools and other employees pay professional tax every year to the panchayat to ride on this road. City buses have stopped plying to the college, citing the bad condition of the road. Hundreds of pass-holding students are put to troubles. Even though the matter has been taken to the attention of the authorities concerned, no action has been taken so far. C. Balasubramanian, Madurai. Footboard travelling
Footboard travelling in city buses especially by college students is increasing. There are people who travelling on the footboard, even if there is space inside the bus, obstructing the passage for other passengers. The Government should make a law prohibiting the footboard travelling in buses, so that the police should punish the footboard travellers. V.S. Sankaran, Madurai. Form committee
Recently one of my colleague’s two daughters was hit by a city bus and lost their lives near the Andalpuram bridge. The next day also a man was hit by a lorry at the same place. Nowadays accidents are happening quite frequently. This clearly shows that there is a lack of coordination among highways, police and state transport officials. The need of the hour is to form a committee headed by District Collector comprising all the above said three department officials and some citizens’ forum to avert accidents. C.R. Kumaran, Madurai. Loudspeaker menace
There is a growing concern among the public about the ill-effects of the nuisance caused by loud speakers these days. Whether it is an auspicious occasion in a house, a festival in a temple or a funeral, loudspeakers are invariably. It appears that licence is granted only to use box speakers, subject to certain conditions. Nevertheless, they are always observed more in breach with impurity. Experts say that when the decibel level goes beyond 80, hearing impairments will be permanent. It is time the administration came down on violaters. V. Krishnamoorthy, Madurai. Pamban bridge
The 94-year-old historic bridge, also known as Pamban viaduct, connecting Madurai and Rameswaram is an engineering marvel. Now seeking recognition of the World Heritage Status from the UNESCO, this 2.06-km-long bridge across the Palk Strait is a pride of the railways. The metre gauge bridge has now been modified and modernised at a cost of Rs.50 crore to suit broad gauge specifications, using purely indigenous technology. That the new bridge is now designed to carry lesser load than the metre gauge and move at a lesser speed than before and is not meant for freight traffic. This is really a disturbing factor. S. Gopalan, Maraimalai Nagar.
