Rs.2.57 lakh was recovered from them
CHENNAI: Two security guards were arrested and Rs.2.57 lakh cash that they allegedly stole from the bookstore on Anna Salai where they were employed was recovered by the police. The action followed a complaint from Venkatesa Ramanathan of Higginbothams that Rs 2.57 lakh cash kept in the locker was missing, when the bookstore was opened on Saturday. Triplicane Deputy Commissioner of Police M. Ramasubramani on Monday said preliminary inquiries with the employees revealed that on July 6, two security guards — Javid Ahmed (24) and Abdul Hameed (22) — both from Vellore district, had handed over the keys to the night shift guards after locking the premises. On suspicion, a special team rushed to Vellore and questioned both Ahmed and Hameed. They confessed to having committed the crime. Based on their statements, police recovered the money kept in their aunt’s house. Mr. Ramasubramani said Ahmed and Hameed had actually not handed over the keys of the front door of the premises. While Ahmed was reportedly hiding inside the building, his accomplice Hameed waited outside. At around 10 p.m. when Ahmed came out with the cash, they both left for Vaniambadi, police said. They were recruited through a private security agency only last month. They were produced before a city court which remanded them to judicial custody.
