TIRUCHI: Two young students — Avipsha Das of Tiruchi city and S. Dinesh of Lalgudi —, who won the Bal Shree awards presented by the National Bal Bhavan, New Delhi, were felicitated by Transport Minister K. N. Nehru here on Monday. While Avipsha Das is a student of St. James Higher Secondary School in the city, 13-year-old Dinesh, a boy with cerebral palsy, is an inmate of Rural Habitation Centre run by the Spastic Society of Tiruchi, at Lalgudi. The Tiruchi regional office of the State Department of Art and Culture had sponsored both of them for the awards. President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam presented the awards at a function at New Delhi recently. The Department of Art and Culture conducted competitions in performing arts, creative arts, creative writing and innovative science in various categories for students of schools in the Tiruchi region, comprising Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur and Perambalur districts. Nine students, including six girls, were selected for the South zone level competition, in which three of them were selected for the national level Bal Shree award contest held at New Delhi. A total of 22 students from different States were selected for Bal Shree awards, including Avipsha Doss and Dinesh. While Avipsha was selected for her creative writing, Dinesh was selected for creative art, according to the Assistant Director of Art and Culture, here, R. Gunasekaran. Accompanied by the Assistant Director of Art and Culture, R. Gunasekaran, both the awardees called on Mr. Nehru on Monday. He appreciated the stellar performance of the youngsters.
