SPEEDSTER’S NEMESIS: The Speed Laser Guns acquired by the Transport Department in Hyderabad on Tuesday. A total of 38 guns will cover the State.

HYDERABAD: Motorists driving at high speeds in the State will now have to drive at their own peril. The Regional Transport Authority (RTA) has procured 38 Speed Laser Guns to record photos and data of the vehicles that violate the stipulated speed limit and penalise them.

The German-made laser gun is a speed enforcement system emitting laser beams to measure the speed of a vehicle, take picture and give an on-the-spot printout describing details of the offence in just 0.3 seconds. Each gun costs around Rs. 10 lakh.

Information pertaining to the place where speeding is recorded, speed of the vehicle and distance from where the picture was taken will be available in the printout. Authorities will be taking signature of the driver on the printout and later use it as evidence in the court of law, explains a senior transport official. The gun emits the laser beams up to a distance of 1.5 km and can measure the maximum speed of 500 kmph. During nights, the gun takes pictures with the help of ‘Red Plus’ infrared rays without causing inconvenience to the drivers.

Violators would be punished under sections 183 and 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act for over-speeding and posing danger to others with a fine up to Rs. 1,000 and imprisonment of six months.

And if the violator commits the offence twice in three years, then he/ she would be levied a penalty of Rs. 2,000 and imprisonment up to two years.

The RTA is proposing to operate 10 guns in twin cities very soon, five in Cyberabad and the rest in different districts after providing training to RTA Motor Vehicle Inspectors, Hyderabad and Cyberabad police.
