DHARWAD: Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar has directed the officials of the Food and Civil Supplies Department to hold joint inspection with officials of the Regional Transport Office to check misuse of domestic LPG cylinders in motor vehicles. Chairing a meeting of the Dharwad District Consumers Protection Council here on Tuesday he also directed the officials to take steps to check the pollution from vehicles. Mr. Srikar said that joint inspections should be done by officials of Department of Legal Metrology and Agriculture Department to ensure supply of quality seeds and fertilisers to farmers. Rights
He said there was a need for the officers to ensure protection of consumer rights. He asked the health officials of Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation to conduct surprise checks on hotels and restaurants to ensure that hygienic food was served to the consumers. Earlier, the meeting was informed that orders were passed under the provisions of the Essential Commodities Act to seize kerosene, petrol and domestic LPG cylinders worth Rs. 10.30 lakh. K.S. Kallanagoudar, joint director, Department of Food and Civil Supplies, told the meeting that last year the department had booked 133 cases after raids on petrol stations, kerosene distributors and PDS shops, of which 130 cases had been ruled in favour of the Government. P.C. Arjunagi, assistant controller, Department of Legal Metrology, told the meeting that Rs. 8.95 lakh was collected from offenders in 915 cases in the district last year. He said apart from that, another 905 cases had been registered against merchants after raids on 62,704 shops. S.D. Avaradi, district health officer, said while 72 food samples were collected for tests, adulteration was not proved in samples. Senior officials C.M. Noormansur, A.C. Swamy, T.M. Annapurnamma and S.P.
