Government’s move to allow bauxite mining evokes protest

Staff Reporter

Mining permitted from land in Kinanoor-Karinathalam village

Region faces shortage of drinking water

BJP threatens to organise agitations

KASARAGOD: Environmental organisations and Opposition parties are up in the arms over the State Government’s decision to permit a private sector company to mine bauxite from 75 hectares of land in Kinanoor-Karinathalam village here. The Government announced its decision to this effect in the Assembly last week.

According to environmental organisations, the area where mining has been proposed has a fragile ecology and mining activities were likely to damage it. Environmentalists said mining would also lower the water table in the region which was already facing shortage of drinking water. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it would protest against any move to allow mining in the Kinanoor-Karinathalam region without studying the impact on the eco-system. The BJP said it would organise sustained agitations if the Government failed to take into account the opinion of the local people on the issue. The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) said mining activities would be allowed only after taking into consideration the feelings of the public. It said the Government had, only in principle, given the permission for mining activities. The State Government granted permission for mining only after the Union Government cleared the company’s proposal, CPI(M) district secretary A.K. Narayanan said. He said the Geology Department should conduct an environment impact assessment before giving permission to mining activities.
