Computer lab gutted in Pondicherry University

Puducherry: Computer hardware and peripherals in the computer lab of the School of Management at Pondicherry University in Kalapet near here were destroyed in a fire on Tuesday. A university source said that electrical short circuit was the cause of the accident.

The preliminary assessment showed that around Rs.15 lakh worth equipment was lost in the fire. Fire fighting units from Kalapet rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control.

The university authorities ordered an enquiry into the accident. As soon as smoke was seen spreading out of the computer lab, the university authorities contacted the fire station at Kalapet.Vice-Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen and Deputy Registrar J. Sampath were among those who visited the site and saw the extent of damage caused by the fire.

However, there was no loss of documents and damage to any other wing on the premises, the source added.
