dated July 11, 1957: Khrushchev explains

The Soviet Communist Party chief, Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, told a meeting at Zilina (Czechoslovakia) on July 9 that Russia had “some black sheep in a good herd, but we took the black sheep by the tail and threw them out.” He said of the leaders recently dismissed: “They thought they would take power – and you know how it ended. The Czechoslovak Communist Party fully supports us and the decisions of the 20th Party Congress. That’s friendship.” Mr. Khrushchev, who, with Marshal Nikolai Bulganin, the Soviet Premier, is leading a delegation to Czechoslovakia, said the main purpose of the visit was “to strengthen the friendship of all Socialist and all peace-loving nations. This is possible, but slogans are not enough. It all depends on who stands at the head of the party and what banner they follow.” Mr. Khrushchev told the people of Zilina: “We struggle for peace and we shall never give up. We are guided by reason and confidence in our ideas. We need peace for that and people’s unity. The Americans are rich and sit on their bags of gold but they have no peace of mind. Labour will conquer the world. We are convinced the working class will win.”
