dated July 11, 1957: Tokyo’s claim

Tokyo has claimed the title of the world’s largest city following publication of the capital’s latest population census. A Metropolitan Government spokesman said Tokyo’s population as on June 1 totalled 8,471,637, and in view of the expanding birth-rate it could be conservatively assumed that the capital’s population today totalled more than 8,500,000. The spokesman said the latest information on the population of New York and London showed that the former had a registered population of 8,150,000 and the latter 8,346,145.
