KOLKATA: The death toll in south Bengal floods has mounted to 45. There, however, was some improvement in the overall situation with the level of water in rivers in the region falling and the weather clearing.
More than 9,000 villages had been hit by the floods that came in the wake of last week’s heavy rain. Nearly 5.32 million people have been affected and 987 relief camps set up across the region, the State’s Chief Secretary, Amit Kiran Deb, said here on Tuesday.
The situation was reviewed at a meeting of senior State officials.
The State Government has increased its allocation for relief to Rs 19.15 crore, he said. Medical teams have been rushed to the affected areas to treat those affected by water-borne diseases.
