The passing of former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar removes from the political scene a man of principles. He was among the prominent leaders who fought the Emergency and re-established democracy by ushering in a non-Congress Government at the Centre. His debates in Parliament bore the stamp of a mature leader and he was heard with attention whenever he spoke or intervened. He was a role model for MPs. V.S. Srinivasan, Hyderabad Chandra Shekhar was a staunch socialist opposed to economic liberalisation. He even incurred the displeasure of Indira Gandhi for airing his views bluntly.
