TENSE MOMENTS: L. Sushila Devi of Delhi and Soniya of Tamil Nadu go into a clinch during their bout in the 11th SRM-Federation Cup women’s boxing championship on Tuesday.
CHENNAI: The first two days of the 11th SRM-Federation Cup boxing championship on the SRM University Campus at Kattankulathur near here saw seen rain making brief visits; stopping bouts for a while. The organising committee is hoping that it does not play spoilsport altogether. Though Rajesh did not have to bother much about rains. The 22-year-old from Tamil Nadu reached the lightfly semifinals defeating Vikran Kalosia of Delhi 59-54 in an evenly matched contest on Tuesday. A gold medallist in the South Zone meet last year, Rajesh started attacking from the word go. Though aggressive, the Sports Authority of India lad training with former International Devarajan for the last two years, slipped often and that did not help his case at all. In the first two rounds Rajesh did manage to land a few of blows on Kalosias face. The next two, however, saw Kalosia and Rajesh trading blows equally. In the dying minutes of the fourth round, Rajesh used his energies well and stayed calm to win on points. Easy wins
Young and up-coming boxer Soniya and experienced Parveen, both from Tamil Nadu entered the women’s semifinals in the pinweight and lightbantam weight categories respectively. The referee had to stop the contest when Soniya’s opponent L. Sushila Devi of Delhi received injuries in the second round. Parveen outclassed Reena Kaushik of Haryana. Of the 12 women’s matches on Tuesday, seven were totally one-sided; the referee having to stop the contest before the normal time either due to injury or the opponent being outclassed (the point being more than 15). Other results: quarterfinals: Women: (pinweight): Pinki (Har) bt V.K. Swapna (RSPB) RSC (OS) III; Soniya (TN) bt L. Sushila Devi (Del) RSC (H) II; lightfly: Kanaka Durga (AP) bt A.
