Effective method: M.P. Vijayakumar, State Project Director, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, and T.N. Venkatesh, Collector, interacting with students at a school in Karur.
KARUR: Schools that have been brought under the Activity Based Learning (ABL) system through the Sarva Sisksha Abhiyan (SSA) are doing pretty well. The enthusiasm shown by teachers is remarkable, SSA State Project Director M.P. Vijayakumar has said. Mr. Vijayakumar said that ABL was being implemented in 37,000 schools all over the State and has received overwhelming support from teachers and other staff. Students between Standards I and IV stand to benefit from the scheme, he added. Stating that there has been a remarkable change in the primary school atmosphere following the successful implementation of the ABL method, Mr. Vijayakumar observed that the grasping ability of the children too has been tremendous as they learn faster and easier than the conventional method. The Project Director, pointing out that the curriculum and learning material have been designed keeping in mind the Prof. Yashpal Committee recommendations on lessening the workload of the young students among other things, said the students would find the Standard V lessons much easier now after being put through the ABL. Mathematical ability
Mr. Vijayakumar inspected the K. Paramathi Panchayat Union Primary School in which 124 children were studying and also marvelled at the mathematical ability of Saranya, a Standard III student of the school. He interacted with the students and appreciated their faster learning ability recorded by the progress assessment card. Later, Mr. Vijayakumar inspected SSA schools especially those brought under the ABL concept in Thennilai, Chinnatharapuram, Salakavundanpudur, Varikkapatti, Malaikovilur and Varavanai. He also visited the Naganur and Moottakanpatti in which ABL was being implemented in Standards VI, VII and VIII as well. He said that the extension of the ABL concept to those classes was being experimented in 12 districts including Karur and the results initially were rewarding. Collector T.N. Venkatesh, SSA Joint Director S. Kannappan, Chief Education Officer C. Selvaraj, SSA Assistant District Coordinator Krishnamurthy and other officials accompanied the Project Director.
