Concern over spate of suicides Memorandum submitted to DCCB manager
Kakinada: Farmers in large numbers from Razole, Mummidivaram, Pithapuram, Gollapalem and Kakinada took out a rally through the thoroughfares of the city and later staged a dharna in front of the District Cooperative Central Bank on Tuesday seeking waiver of all bank loans. The district Rythu Sangham and the CPI Kakinada area unit jointly organised the agitation. Chelluboyina Kesava Setty, district Rythu Sangham president and also ZPTC member, while addressing the demonstrators said that farmers had been committing suicide owing to heavy indebtedness. The trend had begun during the TDP regime and was still continuing, he added. Insurance cover
T. Madhu, CPI area secretary, demanded a special enactment on the lines of Kerala for freeing farmers from the heavy indebtedness. He wanted that bank loans up to Rs. 1 lakh should be written off immediately. He also sought payment of insurance to those who lost heavily during cyclone and floods. Rythu Sangham leaders -- V.V. Krishna Rao and V. Venkata Ramana, CPI leaders – O. Prabhakara Rao, A. Ramudu and Thadi Satyanarayana and AISF city unit secretary Surendra led the agitation. Later, they called on the DCCB manager and submitted a memorandum with their charter of demands.
