Reddy promises review of Metro sections

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Following opposition from residents, environmental activists and town planners to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s proposal to have elevated tracks along the Central Secretariat-Badarpur line, the Union Government on Tuesday said it was willing to refer the contentious issue to the Group of Ministers for review.

At a meeting headed by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy, it was decided that the proposal to have elevated sections near Defence Colony, East of Kailash and Kailash Colony would be re-assessed by the Group of Ministers.“We met Mr. Jaipal Reddy, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf and DMRC chief E. Shreedharan and apprised them of the adverse impact that an elevated stretch would have on environment and on our lives,” said Rajiv Kakria, vice-president of Greater Kailash-I RWA.

Concern noted

Taking note of concerns raised by the residents, Mr. Reddy indicated his willingness to refer the matter to the GoM for further analysis because the power to take a final decision is not within the purview of his Ministry. “The noise levels in our neighbourhood are already higher than the permissible limit, with the elevated stretch it is expected to go up considerably,” Mr. Kakria said, adding, “The DMRC has been saying that it will maintain the mandatory safe distance from the residential premises, but they do not have any parameters that define this safe distance.”
