Lucknow: The Mayawati Government on Tuesday suffered a setback with the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council in which opposition Samajwadi Party has a majority rejecting three bills on abolition of the law commission and the education and subordinate services selection boards. The bills have already been passed by the Assembly. The SP, which outnumbers the 30 BSP legislators in the 100-member Upper House, did not allow passage of the UP State Law Commission (abolition) bill 2007, UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission (abolition) bill 2007 and UP Secondary Education Services Selection Board (second amendment) bill-2007, passed terming them as anti-people. As soon as the first bill was tabled by leader of the House Swami Prasad Maurya, the SP members said the law commission was needed and the move of the BSP Government to abolish it was “politically motivated” and demanded it be withdrawn. Similar protests were witnessed regarding the other two bills and the House rejected the bills by voice vote. The SP members had earlier put the Government on the mat when the House adopted an amendment on a bill seeking to change the name of King George’s Medical University to Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj University and got it referred to the select committee of the House. PTI SC scholarships
In order to check discrepancies in the distribution of scholarships to Scheduled Caste students, the State Government has decided to directly credit the money to their accounts by computerising the records. Social Welfare Minister Indrajeet Saroj said this in reply to a question raised by Panchanan Rai of teachers’ group in the Legislative Council. Mr. Rai alleged that some officials of Social Welfare and Education Department used to take “cuts” from the students to sanction them scholarships, for which they were eligible. The Minister assured the member that FIRs would be registered against anyone found guilty in this regard. PTI
