PIL petition for water release dismissed

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed a public interest litigation petition seeking to direct the Centre to order release of water from K.R. Sagar Dam in Karnataka as per the Cauvery Water Tribunal orders, and to direct the Tamil Nadu Government to make monthly release of water from Mettur Dam.

The First Bench, comprising Chief Justice A.P. Shah and Justice P. Jyothimani, dismissed the petition filed by R. Karuppan, after pointing out that an expert, Mohanakrishnan, had categorically stated that release of small quantum of water would not benefit farmers in the Cauvery delta region.

It, however, recorded Government Pleader Raja Kalifulla’s submission that the Government was concerned about the welfare of farmers and would consider release of Mettur water once the level reaches 95 feet from the present 85 feet.
