SIVAGANGA: The police on Tuesday arrested K.S.M. Manimuthu, district deputy secretary of the DMK, in connection with the killing of Sivaganga Municipality chairman Murugan in a bomb blast.
Manimuthu, the official DMK candidate for the Municipal Chairman’s post, lost to Murugan in the election.
Sources told The Hindu that he was arrested under section 120(B) (criminal conspiracy) and 109 (abetment) of the Indian Penal Code. The number of those arrested in the case now has now risen to three.
Superintendent of Police N. Kannan said investigation so far had revealed that the accused had bought explosives from a person at Dindigul.
A special team had been sent there for enquiry. Police teams had also been sent to Thiruvananthapuram, Bangalore and Chennai.
Based on the inputs obtained from the suspects, the police, accompanied by bomb squad and fire service personnel, conducted search operations in various places in Sivaganga district and seized 19 electric detonators and some more explosive materials.
