Enjoying nature: Students taking a walk in the rain on the Manipal University campus.
Manipal: For the Malaysian students, who have to come to study at Manipal, the heavy rains, which lash Manipal for three months in a year is a new experience. They have mixed feelings about the rainy season. But all of them agree on one thing, after the scorching summer heat, the rains are a welcome change. Most of the students were pleasantly surprised to experience the continuous rains. Says Tan Cheow Hwa, a student of third year M.B.B.S. at the Kasturba Medical College, “When I came here for the first time, I was surprised because it rained the whole day and night. But some people had told me about it so I had expected it.” Says Noor Amalina Zulkifli, a first year student at the Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC), a constituent of Manipal University, “In Malaysia, we have rains, but it is not like this. I was a bit surprised.” Fatin Nabila Binti Mat Nawi, another first year student of MMMC had expected India to be a warm place. “I never expected rains here to be heavier than in my country,” she says. Besides their classes, how do these Malaysian students spend their time? Mr. Hwa says, “Before rains started, I used to play basketball. Now I stay mostly in my room. I don’t even go to the library. My activities are restricted so I don’t feel it is a pleasant experience.” But for some students, rains are both a pleasant and not so pleasant experience. Ms. Zulkifli says, “Clothes don’t dry fast during the rainy season. During the summer I used to go to Udupi and Mangalore during the weekends. That has stopped now. But I can do a little more study now. I talk to my friends. I feel like sleeping for a longer time. But after the summer I find it a welcome change.” Ms. Nawi says, “The daytime temperature has come down. It is more comfortable for me to study. I spend most of the time studying and watching movies on my laptop.”
