Good show: Vijay Kannan in action in Tiruchi.

TIRUCHI: The spectators at the ongoing all-India ranking tennis tournament in the city were witness to an exciting turnaround brought out by Vijay Kannan, a former Davis Cupper, in the first round.

Experienced

His opponent was just a couple of points away from winning; but Vijay never lost his cool – a trademark of an experienced campaigner.

He literally snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to advance to the next stage.

It has been quite a while since Vijay competed in national ranking tournaments, for, he is now concentrating more on improving his world rankings.

But Tiruchi being his father’s hometown, Vijay decided to compete with verve in front of his relatives and friends.

“Also the ITF Futures tournament is beginning in Chennai later this month and I feel the Tiruchi-event will be a good match practice for me,” he says.

Vijay cherishes the gold medal he won in the Afro-Asian games. “Playing for the country is a great feeling. It definitely brings the best out of you.”

Vijay who played for the Phillips Burg Tennis Club at Frankfurt, Germany, in May, says that such tours help in improving his overall game.

The ultimate aim of the 27-year-old ONGC officer is to enter the top 350 in world rankings, which would enable him to play in qualifying round of the Grand Slams.

“It is tough, but not beyond my reach. I just wish to perform consistently well in the upcoming tourneys,” Vijay adds.
