Malappuram: Koyilandy Municipality will celebrate the beauty and bounty of the monsoon with a week-long programme titled ‘Thiruvathira muthal Kaliyan vare’ (From Thiruvathira to Kaliyan) to coincide with traditional agricultural practices during the rainy season.
The rain festival will be conducted in association with the Public Relations Department and Samsa Nature Club.
Koyilandy Municipal chairperson K. Dasan said the festival was aimed at reviving the agricultural and cultural practices that were once part of the monsoon season in Kerala. It will also create awareness of the need to conserve nature and its resources, as well as strengthen the bond between humans and the environment. Poets will recite verses in celebration of the rain. Students will paint pictures that mirror their innate feelings of the monsoon.
The organisers said the festival was being held at this juncture to revive interest in this bounty of nature that leaves the land green, washed and fresh. Rain helps maintain the rich biodiversity in the State.
Celebrating the rain should be a regular feature and all sections of people should be involved in the programmes, they said. A poets’ meet, seminar, photo exhibition and contests for students have been planned.
