Man throws daughter into river

Jaunpur (U.P.): A man, unable to meet the huge medical expenses of his six-year-old daughter suffering from a kidney ailment, allegedly threw her into a river but she was rescued by fishermen.

Bakheru Sonkar of Devkali village in Jaunpur district pushed Sarita from a bridge over the Gomti river here on Monday after returning from Mumbai.

The girl, ailing for the last three years, was undergoing treatment in a Mumbai hospital.

The man, a vegetable vendor and father of six children, was asked to shell out Rs. 3 lakh for her treatment, police said. Fishermen rescued Sarita after they heard her cries for help. “We will take action against him (Sonkar). At present we are worried about Sarita,” a senior police officer Yogendra Shukla said. Efforts are on to trace the father, he said. — PTI
