IOB frustrates Vijay Grand Slam makes merry
Chennai: Jolly Rovers scored a nine-wicket victory over Globe Trotters on the final day of the first round in the TNCA first division league. The low-scoring duel at IIT-Chemplast ended in a barrage of shots on Tuesday, with host Jolly Rovers racing to the target of 157 in 32.3 overs for the loss of just one wicket. Opener R. Ramkumar remained unbeaten on 73 (100b, 8x4, 1x6) and R. Satish blitzed a 20-ball 46 not out (6x4, 3x6). Earlier, off-spinner R. Ashwin claimed five for 50 (he had a match haul of eight for 81) as Globe Trotters was bowled out for 177 in its second innings. At SRMC, a combination of inclement weather and some determined batting from D. Pramod Das (32), Y. Gyaneswar Rao (42) and A.S.K. Varma (43 not out) prevented holder Vijay from taking the first innings lead over IOB. IOB was 216 for seven when bad light ended play. Grand Slam, replying to Indian Bank’s 378, posted a mammoth 597 for six declared at the ICL-Guru Nanak ground. The second wicket pair of X. Thalaivan Sargunam (175, 323b, 24x4) and J.R. Madanagopal (195, 265b, 21x4, 2x6) put on 372 for the second wicket in 93.3 overs. Then, S. Suresh Kumar (116, 116b, 12x4, 3x6) and K. Martin Sanjeev (67, 53b, 4x4, 4x6) continued the run feast, adding 143 for the fifth wicket in 19.2 overs. Off-spinner Malolan Rangarajan prised out three batsmen. Despite a valiant 106 (193b, 16x4, 2x6) from Subramania Siva, Alwarpet, dismissed for 271, fell 63 runs short of Eagles’ first innings 334 at MAC. Aruna Paceman D. Tamilkumaran grabbed six wickets in the match, however, host India Pistons, following on after being dismissed for 223, finished at 123 for four to force a draw. Vikram Mani remained unbeaten on 47 while S. Lakshmikumar notched up 50 (76b, 3x4, 2x6). In Pistons’ first innings, left-arm spinner R. Pandiarajan and off-spinner S.R. Ganesh Kumar took three wickets each. Off-spinner K. Srinivasan and young left-arm spinner L. Ganesh returned five-wicket hauls as Young Star bundled out Parry’s for 153 at Viveka. Then Young Star set Parry’s a target of 261 in 39 overs. Parry’s, eventually, managed a comfortable draw. The scores: At IIT-Chemplast: Globe Trotters 211 & 177 in 70 overs (R. Ashwin five for 50) lost to Jolly Rovers 232 & 157 for one 32.3 overs (R. Ramkumar 73 not out, R. Satish 46 not out). Rovers 8; Trotters 0.
