New Delhi: Chetan Anand and Jwala Gutta failed to make it to the main draw of the China Open badminton championship at Chengdu, bowing out in the in the qualification round. Chetan, who got a bye in the first round, went down 21-19, 20-22, 21-18 to Yu Li of China. Jwala lost to China’s Wen Li 21-14, 21-9. Shruti Kurien is the only Indian in the women’s singles main draw and meets Shao-Chieh Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the first round. In women’s doubles, the pair of Jwala and Shruti got a direct entry and will play the pair of Johanna Persson and Elin Bergblom of Sweden in the first round. — PTI
