PUDUCHERRY: Can there be a dearth of dance, colour, music and fun when children enjoy doing what they like? The 14th annual day of Yoganjalai Natyalayam and the 39th anniversary celebrations of the Ananda Ashram, which were held at Subbalakshmi Thirumana Nilayam at Muthialpet, had this and a lot more.

The programmes for the day, which began with the customary lighting of the lamp by Meenakshi Devi Bhavanani, director of Yoganjali Natyalayam (Yognat), had a medley of Tamil folk dances on the theme “Senthamizh Nadu”. The children had chosen to perform 10 folk dances, including Karagam, Kavadi, Poikal Kudhirai, Kummi, Kollattam, Paambattam, Bommalattam, Thappu, Mailattam and Oiyalattam.

The students were classified into various groups and named after various dance gurus.

A mini dance drama depicted the battle of Krishna with two wrestlers Musthikasura and Chanura and his battle with Kaliya, the serpent. The Thillana by the Rukmini Devi Group had lyrics in praise of Patanjali, who codified the yogic way of life. In his annual report, Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani, Chairman, Yoganjali Natyalayam, said that more than 100 public performances were given by the staff and students of Yognat this year.

Reena Joseph and S. Geethakala received the ‘best student’ awards for their all round performance. The Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy presented ‘best boy’, ‘best girl’ and ‘best family’ awards to D. Venkatesan, G. Revathy, and the family of C. Sivapragasam (including his wife S. Selvi and their daughters S.S. Lothikha and S.S. Monikha). MLAs S.P. Sivakumar, Om Sakthi Sekar and R. Siva spoke on the occasion.
