Bangalore: Congress members in the Legislative Council on Wednesday alleged that the State Government was killing innocent persons in the guise of taking action against naxalites. Making preliminary submissions on the admissibility of an adjournment motion sought to be moved by them in this regard, Leader of the Opposition H.K. Patil remarked that it was shameful to kill innocent persons. Pointing out that the then Development Commissioner Chiranjeev Singh had submitted a report to the Government on development of naxal-affected districts, Mr. Patil wanted to know whether the report was implemented. He also expressed displeasure over the delay in setting up of the State Human Rights Commission. V.S. Ugrappa (Congress) argued that the Home Minister should have resigned on moral grounds for the killing of innocent persons. Taking exception to this, Janata Dal (S) member Y.S.V. Datta wondered if any Ministers had quit when innocents were killed in the police encounter against the associates of forest brigand Veerappan. Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy argued that there was no need for an adjournment motion in this regard. He maintained that the encounter was a law and order issue. He alleged that naxalites had looted several people. It was not proper to show sympathy towards naxalites, he argued.
