COURTESY CALL: BJP leader Jaswant Singh with AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa at her residence in Chennai on Wednesday.
CHENNAI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh called on All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa here on Wednesday to discuss “the current political situation in the country.” Mr. Singh’s 45-minute meeting with Ms Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence assumes significance in the context of the Presidential election scheduled for July 19. The BJP leader, however, refused to divulge the details of his discussions with the AIADMK leader. He said he would go to Delhi and share them with his party leaders. “Jayalalithaaji said she would be going to Delhi on July 14 to discuss with her colleagues in the Third Front,” Mr Singh told reporters after the meeting. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance is supporting the candidature of Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in the election, while Ms Jayalalilthaa, whose party is part of the United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA), last week told the media that the UNPA had already taken a collective decision not to support the candidates of the United Progressive Alliance or the NDA. The BJP has been appealing to her to support Mr. Shekhawat. On Friday last, Amar Singh, general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, another constituent of the UNPA, called on her. BJP sources said Mr. Jaswant Singh would meet Marumalarchi Dravida Munentra Kazhagam leader Vaiko on Thursday and seek his party’s support for the BJP-backed nominee.
