Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda
CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has declared the year 2007–08 as “Save Electricity Year” to bring down the Amalgamated Transmission and Commercial (AT and C) losses and make the State self-sufficient in power, according to Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. Mr. Hooda said here on Wednesday that he had written to all MPs, MLAs, Presidents of Zila Parishads and Panchayat Samitis that it was necessary to motivate the public to ensure proper reforms in the power sector. It was the need of the hour to conserve electricity, ensure timely payment of bills and not indulge in theft of electricity which was a social evil, he added. Pointing out that the Haryana Power Utilities had suffered a loss of 43.5 per cent during 2005–06 which included 4.7 per cent transmission losses, 29.5 per cent distribution losses and 9.5 per cent revenue collection losses, he said it was imperative to control the situation to avoid further loss. The Power Utilities had been sustaining a loss of about Re.1 per unit of electricity supplied to the consumers. By bringing down the present AT and C losses by one per cent, Rs. 80–90 crore could be saved.
