BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday admitted an appeal by the Income Tax Department against bowling coach of the Indian cricket team and the former test cricketer B.K. Venkatesh Prasad. A Division Bench comprising Justices V. Gopal Gowda and Arali Nagaraj passed the order on an appeal by the Income Tax (IT) Department against an order of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal. The tribunal had overruled an order of the Commissioner of Income Tax who had held that exemption could not be granted to Mr. Prasad for prize money earnings. The IT Department said that Mr. Prasad was an employee of Canara Bank and was receiving salary from the bank. He was also a former cricket player and he was receiving income from the game in the form of tour fee, advertisements, match fee and under other miscellaneous heads. It said. The department said that the Assessing Officer (AO) had in 2001 exempted the income from tour fee, advertisements, match fee and that under miscellaneous head for 1997-98.
