Centre has sanctioned Rs. 33.81 lakh for the project 250 weavers from three districts to be given training
VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Centre has approved a proposal to set up three handloom export zones at a cost of Rs. 64 lakh in the district, the Executive Director of Handloom Export Promotional Council, G. Mathivathanan, has said. Addressing a review meeting here on Wednesday, Mr. Mathivathanan said that the zones would come up at Aruppukottai, Srivilliputtur and Rajapalayam. While the Centre had sanctioned Rs. 33.81 lakh for the purpose, exporters would make a contribution of Rs. 12.2 lakh and the remaining would come from the district fund. As part of setting up of the zones, 250 select weavers from the three zones would be given 2-month training in weaving, quality control and timely delivery of goods. Besides, the funds would be used for technical upgrading of looms and work sheds, he added. The Assistant Director (Handlooms), M. Veluchamy, said that hand-made place mats had very high demand in foreign countries. The groundwork for creating the zones is likely to begin in three months. Similar zones have already been set up in Tiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam and Nagercoil. Mr. Mathivathanan has asked the District Collector (in-charge), S. Malarvizhi, to provide crèche, drinking water and toilet facilities while upgrading the work sheds.
