THENI: Election to the post of directors of the People Living Below-the-Poverty Line Cooperative Society at Palanichettipatti near here was disrupted for about 20 minutes on Wednesday. Polling commenced in the morning and 123 votes were polled till noon. Suddenly, some agents carrying a ‘liquid blue’ ran towards the ballot box. Even as the election officials pushed them away, the liquid spilled over it. The officials stopped the poll process for sometime to clean the box. The Election Officer, Soundarapandian, lodged a complaint against three polling agents - Siva, Kannan and Baskar. Later, they were handed over to the police. Their aim was to invalidate the polled votes, the officer alleged. As many as 14 persons contested for the post of seven directors. The total number of votes in the society were 196.
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Communist Party of India and the Pattali Makkal Katchi alleged that clashes reported at several cooperative societies and primary agricultural cooperative banks was mainly owing to denial of seats to the allies of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
