Inadequate facility: A view of the bus stand in Tiruvarur.
TIRUVARUR: The Tiruvarur town requires a new bus stand as the old one has outlived its utility and is inadequate to handle the number of buses visiting it.Though the district was carved out from Thanjavur district in the year 1997, the bus stand remains the same with a capacity to hold only 15 buses at the available bays at a time. The Tiruvarur division of the Government State Transport Corporation comprising of Tiruvarur, Thiruthuraipoondi, Mannargudi and Nannilam accounts for a fleet of 220 buses. Besides these buses if those services that go via Tiruvarur from Nagapattinam and Vailankanni to various places inside and outside the State are taken into consideration 865 vehicles come to the bus stand every day. This includes town buses also. Vailankanni and Nagore being major pilgrim centres, a lot of people come from other states in buses that go via Tiruvarur to reach Nagapattinam. Buses go to Bangalore, Chennai, Mysore and many places in Kerala via Tiruvarur from Nagapattinam. “We certainly need a mega bus station like the one at Thanjavur as the traffic is heavy here. The population of commuters has also increased There is an urgent need for creating a new bus stand,” say many residents of the town. According to the Collector, Shambu Kallolikar, a proposal for establishing a new bus stand is pending with the Government. Land for the purpose has been identified near the Bypass Road behind the modern rice mill. As soon as the Government approves the proposal, the construction will start, the Collector said.
