Attendents of patients stage gherao at Sishu Bhawan

Death of one-and-half-year-old boy the trigger

CUTTACK: Tension prevailed at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel PG Institute of Pediatrics popularly called ’Sishu Bhawan’ here on Wednesday when the attendants of patients gheraoed the hospital on Wednesday morning alleging negligence in treatment.

One Kanduri Rana of Pattamundai area of Kendrapara district alleged that his one and a half year old son died on Tuesday evening due to lack of emergency facilities and basic treatment in the hospital.

The attendants of other patients echoed the feeling of Rana and joined him in protesting against the poor treatment facilities now available here which is considered to be the only referral hospital for children in the State.

Surprisingly, a few staff members of the hospital were also seen giving tacit support to the protesters as they were apparently aggrieved over the lukewarm response of the government towards the inherent problems of the hospital.

Enquiry

The protesters, however, relented when hospital superintendent Prof N K Mohanty, who is also the principal of SCB Medical College,

visited the hospital on Wednesday morning and assured that an enquiry would be conducted over the alleged negligence in treatment. "We are aware of the fact that the hospital is running with acute shortage of staff.

The matter is under active consideration of the state government to fill the vacancies here", he said.

The hospital, although, got a facelift only three months ago when it was renovated by a Japanese aid of Rs 40 crore, it is still dogged with certain inherent problems like its dismal staff position.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) and the Hospital Employees Coordination Committee have repeatedly suggested creating new posts in Sishu Bhawan where a two-storied international standard building over an area of 18,000 square feet came up with additional facilities including 116 new beds.
