BHUBANESWAR: The State Government was taking a series of measures to contain global warming, Science and Technology Minister Sanjeeb Kumar Sahoo told the Assembly on Wednesday. In reply to a question by Biju Janata Dal legislator Pratap Jena, the Minister said renewable energy such as wind solar, hydro and biomass was being encouraged and afforestation activities were being taken up in order to reduce greenhouse gas emission. Observing that contribution of Orissa to global warming was negligible because of lower level of fossil fuel use, Mr. Sahoo, however, said that the State government was contemplating use compact fluorescent lamps in government buildings and buildings of the State-run public sector undertakings to increase energy efficiency. The Government was also gradually phasing out old commercial public transport vehicles and use fuels conforming to anti-pollution and emission standards, the Minister said. With the help of NGOs awareness programmers were also being taken up for planting more trees to keep the environment pollution free, Mr. Sahoo said.
