TIRUVARUR: The district administration has identified seven sites for the proposed medical college that is likely to be started from next year. The State Government announced the medical college in the budget.
Accompanied by the Collector, Shambu Kallolikar, the Health Secretary, V.K. Subburaj, the Director of Medical Education, Thiagavalli Kirubakaran, and senior officials of the Health Department inspected the sites recently. The construction would begin once the Government gives its approval for one of the sites.
The Government Hospital here is located on fifteen acres of land. As per the norms of the Indian Medical Council, the hospital must have 300 beds for inpatients and an area of 25 acres. Hence, the hospital is due for expansion. A medical college would be a boon to the backward district of Tiruvarur.
