East-West corridor to connect Connaught Place and New Delhi railway station with Anand Vihar

New flyover to be constructed on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg at an estimated cost of Rs. 450 crore

NEW DELHI: Removing a major impediment to fast-paced development of the Capital ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Technical Committee of the Delhi Development Authority on Wednesday approved eight new major road projects. These include the much talked about East-West corridor that would connect Connaught Place and New Delhi railway station with Anand Vihar in East Delhi across the Yamuna and a flyover at the busy ITO Crossing.

Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia said four of the projects are associated with the Commonwealth Games and would provide relief to a large number of commuters and vehicle owners by cutting down on fuel consumption and travel time.

The approvals include the intersection design of road from the proposed Commonwealth Games Village to National Highway-24 in the Capital’s trans-Yamuna area, development works at the Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg-Vikas Marg intersection at ITO, the nearby Tilak Marg-Sikandara Road intersection as also the Vikas Marg-Ring Road intersection near Ring Road. They were considered and cleared in principle by the DDA Technical Committee that has called for more details before according its final approval.

Dr. Walia said the East-West corridor would be commissioned at an estimated cost of Rs.1,000 crore. It would provide a direct elevated link between Marginal Bund Road near Geeta Colony to Bhavbhuti Marg near New Delhi railway station.

The new flyover on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg would be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 450 crore. It will also have a High Capacity Bus System (HCBS) corridor and provide a signal-free right turn towards I.T.O. and signal-free movement of traffic at A junction. The flyover would facilitate a direct flow of traffic from the Tilak Bridge side to Delhi Gate near Khuni Darwaja. A special provision for parking would also be made under this project.

The Committee also approved a corridor improvement plan of Road No. 56 from its intersection with NH-24 at Gazipur crossing to Anand Vihar Metropolitan Terminal-cum-ISBT.

Dr. Walia said remodelling of Anand Vihar ISBT Road No.56 would be completed at an estimated cost of Rs.250 crore. This would include improvement of road, alignment of HCBS corridor, entry to Anand Vihar railway station and ISBT.

The Technical Committee has after a long wait also approved the six-lane elevated highway at Badarpur on Mathura Road that would ease traffic flow between Delhi and Faridabad. The proposal envisages signal free movement in all directions with segregated and dedicated cycle and pedestrian movement.

At present nearly 120,000 vehicles use the road daily for travelling from Delhi to Faridabad while about 110,000 vehicles use the road daily in the reverse direction.

The Technical Committee also approved the construction of a rail under bridge (RUB) on the existing railway level crossing at Narela Lampur Road in Narela Sub-City. This project is important because at present over 15,000 vehicles use this crossing every day and most often they encountered long waiting periods as the crossing used to close about 41 times daily.

Dr. Walia said the Archaeological Survey of India had also given its nod for commissioning of the 2.5 km Salimgarh Fort-Velodrome Road that was kept in abeyance due to its objections.

The project would also have clover leaves to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic up to the Geeta Colony flyover and the new road would reduce the traffic volume on Ring Road near Raj Ghat.

The projects cleared by the DDA Technical Committee would now be referred to the Delhi Urban Arts Commission for its concurrence, the Minister said.
