Malas threaten to disrupt hearing by Usha Mehra

Special Correspondent

Factions ask members to be available in large numbers

Supporters to defy police restrictions, proceed to venue

‘Government will be responsible for consequences’

HYDERABAD: Organisations representing the Mala community threatened to create a scene at the hearing to be taken up by Usha Mehra, chairperson of the National Commission constituted to examine sub-categorisation of SCs in the State at the Hyderabad Collectorate on Sunday.

Both factions of Mala Mahanadu, which are opposed to categorisation, gave a call to members of the community across the State to be available here in large numbers for a demonstration. The president of one faction, Jupudi Prabhakar Rao, said supporters of his outfit will gather at Indira Park and proceed to the venue defying restrictions of the police.

On the other hand, Karem Sivaji, president of the other faction, has asked his supporters from various districts to reach the State capital on Friday or Saturday. In a statement, he called upon them to be prepared to sacrifice their lives if the Government tried to sabotage their programme of confronting Ms. Mehra.

Mr. Prabhakar Rao told a news conference on Wednesday that the Government would be squarely responsible for the consequences if the police obstructed the march by his supporters from Indira Park. They proposed a peaceful demonstration but the situation could take a serious turn if they were provoked. He said his faction would boycott Ms. Mehra’s programme as her panel was examining an issue that was turned down by the Supreme Court and the National Commission for SCs and STs. However, her meeting could have been organised at a public place which was easily accessible to all.
