Slow going: The Chief Minister’s convoy at the Secretariat on Wednesday evening.
CHENNAI: A sudden downpour brought the city to a halt on Wednesday evening, catching several road-users unaware and leading to inundation in some stretches. According to Meteorological Department, Nungambakkam recorded 1.6 cm of rainfall and Meenambakkam 5.7 mm in the 12 hours ending 8.30 p.m. The most part of rain occurred between 4.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. Several parts of the city, including Alwarpet, Ayanavaram, Anna Nagar, T.Nagar and K.K.Nagar and suburbs such as Ambattur, Puzhal and Tambaram, reeled under the showers. Motorists and commuters on Anna Salai took cover under the bus shelters and below bridges to avoid getting drenched in the sudden downpour. The rain has benefited the catchment areas of the city reservoirs. Cholavaram received 1.7 cm of rain in the morning. The Meteorological Department officials attributed the sudden showers to the thunderstorm activity that is common during this month. The officials forecast a partly cloudy sky and a possibility of shower or thundershower in some areas on Thursday.
