June is the time when call taxi operators exploit parents anxious to arrange transport for their children going to schools. The operators fix fare according to their will. The monthly charge for the transport is more than the school tuition fee. Above all, the drivers decide which students they would carry in their vehicles. Children in areas Irugur are the worst affected. No driver is willing to transport children from Singanallur Lake to Irugur beyond the railway crossing. The drivers take students from Ondipudur, SIHS Colony, etc. which already have good mode of transport. Authorities concerned should look into the matter and regulate operation of call taxis and vans carrying children to schools. Schools authorities should ask the drivers to register their names at schools and allocate students to the cabs according to routes. This will help in identifying the drivers, fixing their responsibility and also ensuring their reliability. Rajasekaran, Irugur. Shift garbage yard
Vellalore near Podanur is a dumping place for all rubbish and garbage from Coimbatore city and over 500 tonnes of them are dumped there. Since last month, after the rain, flies generated by the garbage have spread to homes in Vellalore, Chettipalayam and Podanur. Trucks carry the garbage in the day time spreading stinking odour. The garbage yard should be shifted from the residential area. Amalraj, Bharathi Nagar Good example
Implementation of innovative measures aimed at serving society should be welcomed. When educated, honest and competent people occupy seats of power, they make use of the opportunity to analyse the prevailing situations thoroughly, find out deficiencies and take effective measures quickly to set things right. Coimbatore Police Commissioner C.K. Gandhirajan has been straining every nerve to do good to the public at large. Latest in the list of the fruitful measures initiated by him is the campaign which he inaugurated on July 9 to create awareness on safe banking. May his tribe increase! K.D.Viswanaathan, Thadagam Road. Unsafe zebra crossing
I would like to bring to the notice of the Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, the zebra crossing in front of the railway station which is unsafe. There is no median on this stretch. Pedestrians may be hit by speedy vehicles on both sides of the road. This should be shifted. N.R. Ravisankar, Vilankurichi. Readers can send mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in with phone and address
