Thiruvananthapuram: Train services between Thiruvananthapuram Central and Kollam were disrupted for over two-and-a-half hours on Wednesday morning after passengers proceeding in the Sabari Express detained the train at Varkala station to protest against the alleged misbehaviour of the ticket checking staff. The incidents started around 7.30 a.m. when the ticket checking squad of the Divisional Commercial Manager started ‘fortress check’ in the Sabari Express that left Thiruvananthapuram Central at 7.10 a.m. The squad caught 19 passengers who were travelling in sleeper coaches of the train without valid tickets. The checking was conducted after stopping the train at Kochuveli. Top Railway officials were present along with the squad when the drive was carried out. According to the Railways, the season tickets of these passengers were confiscated by the staff for further action as they refused to pay the fine for violating the provisions of the Railway Act. The squad also carried out checks in the 1082 Kanyakumari-Mumabi Express. Enraged by the behaviour of the checking staff, the passengers detained the Sabari Express at Varkala railway station. They shouted slogans and allegedly threw stones at the Mumbai-Kanyakumari Express that was proceeding from Kollam to Thiruvananthapuram. Following this, services between Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam were disrupted. District Collector N. Ayyappan and Panniyan Ravindran, MP, held discussions.
