NEW DELHI: Negotiations between the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration and the students’ union going on since Tuesday “failed” after the Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday vetoed a draft agreement evolved by students. The draft suggested that students would issue a renewed appeal to Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya to revoke the punishment orders on the basis of regret expressed by them, following which he would reconsider the punishments in a time-bound manner so as to enable the students to take registration in this semester itself, as the last date for registration is August 14. “Though this draft was suggested by the Rectors, the Vice-Chancellor on receiving it refused to endorse it. Instead he made it clear that the punishments could not be reconsidered earlier than August 30 which meant that the affected students would still lose at least one semester,” said JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) general secretary Sandeep Singh. When contacted, Rector-I Rajendra Prasad said the students tried to pre-empt the V-C’s decision. The indefinite hunger strike called by the JNUSU entered its 12th day on Wednesday.
