A useful tool gathers dust

GUNTUR: A modern and mobile water testing kit given to the Guntur Rate Payers’ Association by Italian city Bologna as part of European Union-sponsored Eco-Budget programme has been lying idle for the last one year for want of skilled professionals.

The water kit was presented to the association in November 2006 following suggestion from a team of civic officials from the Bologna Municipality under the environmental auditing and cooperation project.

Another kit was being used by the Guntur Municipal Corporation. The kit was developed by ‘Tara Nirman Kendra’, a New Delhi-based organisation.

“We do not have qualified and skilled persons to use this kit. We have asked interested persons to use this equipment,” association secretary K. Satyanarayana told The Hindu.

Test parameters

The kit can test 14 parameters governing the quality of water, including turbidity, residual chlorine, dissolved oxygen, fluoride, phosphorous and nitrite. Depending on the result, advance test could be conducted at the laboratory.

When the issue was brought to the notice of Mayor Kanna Nagaraju, he said that the GMC would immediately take back the kit and give it to any other association that can put it to use.

He said that the water kit, in possession of the GMC, was being regularly used and samples being tested. “We are taking remedial measures based upon the results of the tests. This is quite handful device to test the quality of water,” Mr. Naga Raju said.

The Guntur corporation gets the samples of water from various sources tested at the laboratory in the Government General Hospital and the kit supplied by the Eco-Budget team from Bologna is used for the purpose of cross-checking the facts. Even the citizens are encouraged to complain to the Mayor directly and get samples for testing so that any local problem is rectified immediately.
