Young woman killed

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: An as-yet-unidentified State government bus killed a 16-year-old on the Grand Southern Trunk Road at Peerkankaranai near Tambaram on Wednesday and sped away without stopping. She was riding pillion on her father’s motorcycle around 11 a.m. They were returning from a private engineering college in Kolapakkam near Vandalur, after remitting the admission fee for the young woman. N. Sukanya was from Hasthinapuram near Chromepet. The bus hit the two-wheeler near the Peerkankaranai Lake bus stop.

Natarajan, the father, suffered injuries on his hand, but Sukanya died on the spot. Mr. Natarajan told the police it was a government bus that hit them, but he could not provide any other identifying particulars about the bus. A pall of gloom descended on Venkatraman Nagar as the body was taken home there after post-mortem in the Chromepet General Hospital. Saradha, Sukanya’s mother, is a typist with the Home Department and Mr. Natarajan is running a plastic goods making unit.

Accident-prone stretch

The police said investigation was on to trace the bus. The stretch of National Highway 45 (GST Road) between Peerkankaranai and Tambaram is accident-prone. While the widening of the road and provision of medians has improved driving conditions, overspeeding has become common.

The bottleneck spot near Irumbuliyur, particularly, is a high-risk zone. With no warning signs on speed limits, pedestrian crossings and road intersections, drivers of heavy vehicles tend to throw caution to the winds, residents of Irumbuliyur pointed out.
